mike asked about naming conventions
At one job we used trees: pine, spruce, juniper, oak, birch, ...
At another job we used mining and ghost towns in Boulder county: nederland, balarat, salina, goldhill, ward, eldora, ...
At my last job I suggested the names of mountain peeks that could be seen from the office: Long's Peak, Carabou, Sanitas, and a bunch of other's I can't remember. I also suggested a list of Colorado canyons, and a list of mountain passes.
Colorado fourteeners are pretty common 'round these parts.
On my boxes at home I favor names from Zork: zork, grue, dark, plugh, xyzzy, lamp, mailbox, froboz. I don't actually have that many devices to name, but someday soon I'll need names for the toaster, microwave, ice cream maker and so on. When picking naming conventions, it's best to be prepared for growth. :-) Zork keeps weaving its way into my computing life. That's a story for another day.
